Maca – The Superfood of the Andes Mountains
The maca-plant comes from the Peruvian Andes and grows at about 4000 – 4500 metres height. It belongs to the family of the cruciferous plants and has been cultivated in the Andes for a long time as basic food. Despite several weather conditions it grows up at such a huge height, where a human being would already reach its limits.
Nevertheless the plant survives there extremely well and has a remarkable composition of nutritional values. Maca contains almost 60% carbs and a very high protein level of over 10% as well as many mono and multiply unsaturated fatty acids. It is also remarkable, that the protein of the maca plant is very well composed and contains an outstanding proportion of amino acids. The fibre content of 9% is also noteworthy and it provides many minerals, such as potassium, iron, copper, magnesium, calcium and iodine as well as a lot of B-Vitamines and Vitamin C + K.
The maca tubers are often dried, whereby almost all nutrients remain. The sweet-bitterly powder is suitable as an addition to smoothies, many sweets and desserts, but also to cereals and even to tea.
Maca also has health benefits. It can have a positive effect to our well-being and rise our mood. Besides, it can be good for our immune system and help against tiredness.
